Founder and president of the Home of Charlotte’s Children Foundation (HCCF), Mrs. Beulah Plowright-Buzzi, has announced the closure of that facility, situated on Lloyd Young Drive, Albion in Montego Bay, effective September 30, 2014. In a press release, Mrs. Plowright-Buzzi said: “The Home honoured the memory of my mother Charlotte Thompson-Plowright, who was also mother to any child in need in our community, and it was her dying wish that something be done to help children in need of care and protection. Having fulfilled this dream, the Foundation is moving into another phase.”
Home of Charlotte’s Children Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization registered in 1996, undertook the complete refurbishing and extension of an old abandoned building situated at Albion, which subsequently became home to many children in need. Home of Charlotte's Children was officially opened in 1998, after receiving approval from the then Children Services, now Child Development Agency (CDA) – under the Ministry of Health.
“This has been a very challenging experience, but a spiritually rewarding one to have been able to empower young lives; remove emotional scars and help these children to regain dignity” said Mrs. Plowright-Buzzi.
Home of Charlotte’s Children Foundation has enabled several young wards of the state to grow up as a family in a well managed home where they received basic education until they were old enough to attend primary and subsequently secondary schools before pursuing their goals and aspirations.
“I am heartened by the fact that many lives have been made better through this dedication and that Charlotte Plowright’s dream was fulfilled,” stated Mrs. Buzzi. “I particularly thank my husband for his relentless support, both moral and tangible, and will always be grateful to those friends and well wishers who assisted my efforts with these children over the years.”
Mrs. Buzzi stated that the closure of the residential home in Albion did not signal an end to the Foundation’s support for Jamaica’s children. “On the contrary; we are now moving into a different phase that will kick into high gear in 2015. Details will be disclosed at a later date,” she said.
A number of children who have grown up at the Home and scores of others in the community are pursuing tertiary level education and skills programmes at various institutions with support from the Foundation.
In vacating the home in Montego Bay, Mrs. Buzzi underscored that Home of Charlotte’s Children Foundation is not affiliated to any other charitable organization in Jamaica or any part of the world. |
